LIVERPOOL – Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has hit back at suggestions that manager Arne Slot could be replaced by Xabi Alonso. The Dutch defender labeled a journalist’s question as “highly disrespectful” following a tense press conference ahead of the Reds’ Champions League victory against Olympique de Marseille.
Rumors have been swirling at Anfield regarding Slot’s future, with some speculating that the club could turn to former midfield legend Xabi Alonso to steady the ship. When asked directly about the rumors, Slot laughed it off, jokingly claiming that “Alonso had called to say he’d take my job in six months.”
Van Dijk Defends the Boss
However, Van Dijk was not in a joking mood. Speaking to the BBC after making his 350th appearance for the club, the captain stood by his manager.
“The criticism is justified based on our performances this season, especially as defending champions,” Van Dijk admitted. “But that question was disrespectful. It’s been a difficult period for the players and the manager, but he has handled the situation with class.”
Focus on Bournemouth and Europe
Despite the internal noise, Liverpool remains 4th in the Premier League standings. They face a crucial trip to Bournemouth this Saturday, looking to close the gap at the top.
In Europe, the focus shifts to next Wednesday’s clash against Qarabag at Anfield. Following the win over Marseille, a victory against the Azerbaijani side would secure Liverpool’s direct qualification for the Champions League Round of 16.
