Manchester United have officially turned their attention to two of European football’s most coveted tacticians, Thomas Tuchel and Roberto De Zerbi, to lead the club following the departure of Ruben Amorim.

After a sudden disagreement with the board led to Amorim’s exit, the hierarchy at Old Trafford is determined not to rush into a permanent appointment. According to Fabrizio Romano, the club’s leadership has identified Tuchel and De Zerbi as the “ideal profiles” to restore United’s identity. However, with both managers currently in high-profile roles, the Red Devils are prepared to play the long game.

The Duel: Tuchel’s Experience vs. De Zerbi’s Innovation

Manchester United is looking for an established name to manage a squad filled with star talent. The board’s priority list reflects two distinct footballing philosophies:

  • Thomas Tuchel: The current England manager is seen as the “heavyweight” option. His elite track record at Chelsea and Bayern Munich makes him a safe bet for major trophies, though any move depends on his commitment to the Three Lions post-World Cup.
  • Roberto De Zerbi: The Italian maestro is admired for his revolutionary attacking style. Currently employed and highly valued by his current club, De Zerbi is viewed as the “architect” who could modernize United’s on-field product.

The Interim Solution: Michael Carrick’s Stabilization

As negotiations with such high-caliber managers are notoriously difficult mid-season, Michael Carrick has been entrusted with the manager’s whistle until the end of the campaign.

Carrick’s appointment as interim boss provides the board with the necessary “breathing room” to negotiate. The goal for the former midfielder is simple: stabilize the dressing room and keep the club within reach of European qualification while the long-term project is finalized behind the scenes.

Despite the intense speculation, Romano clarifies that no formal negotiations have begun. Manchester United is currently in the “evaluation phase,” weighing the financial and sporting implications of buyout clauses for either manager.

The club’s supporters are now faced with a waiting game: will it be the tactical pragmatism of Tuchel or the high-octane football of De Zerbi that takes over the Theatre of Dreams?
