Real Madrid chiefs are reportedly suffering from “renewers’ remorse” after extending Ferland Mendy’s contract until 2027, with the French defender’s physical condition reaching a breaking point.
The decision to renew the 30-year-old left-back in late 2024 was an express request from former coach Carlo Ancelotti. However, as Real Madrid enters the crucial second half of the 2025/26 season under Xabi Alonso, the club’s management is now desperately looking for an exit strategy for a player one source describes as a “medical miracle” just for still being on the pitch.
The ‘Ancelotti Legacy’ Problem
Mendy was a vital pillar in Real Madrid’s 15th Champions League title win, which prompted the board to reward him with a new deal despite internal warnings from the medical staff. According to journalist Jorge C. Picón, those warnings have now become a nightmare reality.
Since Xabi Alonso took over in June 2025, Mendy has struggled to adapt to the high-intensity tactical demands of the new era. His season stats paint a grim picture:
- Appearances: Only 3 matches across all competitions.
- Minutes: Just one start (against Olympiacos in the Champions League).
- Injury Record: He has missed over 60% of available minutes this season due to recurring muscular issues.
Transfer Stagnation: No Takers for the Frenchman
Real Madrid’s recruitment team, led by José Ángel Sánchez, has reportedly been offering Mendy to several clubs across Europe and the Saudi Pro League. However, his injury history and high wages make him a “toxic asset” in the market.
While Transfermarkt currently values Mendy at a modest €8M – €10M, his physical fragility has scared off potential suitors like Lyon and several Premier League clubs. The club even explored a move for Alphonso Davies to replace him, but after the Canadian renewed with Bayern Munich until 2030, Madrid found themselves stuck with Mendy’s contract until June 2027.
What’s Next for Mendy?
With the Supercopa de España final against Barcelona just days away and Mendy once again ruled out through injury, the patience at the Bernabéu has run out. Unless a low-ball offer arrives this January, Real Madrid may be forced to keep the Frenchman as a backup, essentially paying for a mistake made “in the heat of the moment” back in 2024.
