LONDON – Following Gotham FC’s narrow 1-0 defeat to Corinthians in the FIFA Women’s Club World Cup semifinal, Brazilian star Gabi Portilho didn’t hold back. The forward, who became a legend at the São Paulo club before moving to the NWSL, used the post-match interview to expose financial struggles and internal mismanagement at her former team.

Portilho, 31, spent five trophy-laden seasons with the “Brabas,” winning five Brazilian league titles and three Copa Libertadores. However, her departure in 2024 was marked by behind-the-scenes frustration.

“This victory masks the truth”

Despite Corinthians’ joy in reaching the final, Portilho warned that the result hides a darker reality. “I’m rooting for the girls who are still there, but this victory masks a lot of things happening on the other side,” Portilho told reporters in the mixed zone. “People don’t know what goes on inside. I truly hope Corinthians pays the girls because it changes their lives.”

Reports suggest that while salaries are currently up to date, the club still owes significant performance bonuses from the 2025 season a total estimated at R$ 16.4 million (approx. $3.2M USD).

A Bitter Reunion

The match at Brentford Stadium was a tactical battle, decided late by a Gabi Zanotti goal in the 83rd minute. Portilho, who started for the American champions, had to leave the pitch in the second half due to a physical discomfort.

“It’s difficult to cheer for something that isn’t being done fairly,” the striker concluded, citing the lack of professionalism from certain board members as her reason for leaving Brazil.

What’s Next?

While Corinthians prepares to face Arsenal in the historic first-ever final at Emirates Stadium this Sunday, Gotham FC will battle Morocco’s AS FAR for the third-place spot. As the reigning NWSL and CONCACAF champions, the New York/New Jersey side enters the bronze medal match as heavy favorites.
