The 27-year-old midfielder joins the WSL leaders in a £600k deal, declaring she is “ready to challenge herself” in English football.

Manchester City Women have sent a clear message to their title rivals by completing the marquee signing of United States international Sam Coffey. The 27-year-old midfielder joins the Sky Blues from NWSL side Portland Thorns for a reported fee of approximately £600,000 .

City, who currently sit comfortably at the top of the Women’s Super League (WSL), identified Coffey as the perfect engine to bolster their midfield for the second half of the season.

“Simply Thrilling” – Coffey’s First Words Upon her arrival in Manchester, Coffey expressed her excitement about the move and her readiness to adapt to the technical demands of the English game.

“The fact that it’s official, that I’m here, and that everything is real and happening is simply thrilling,” Coffey said during her presentation. “I couldn’t be more prepared and happy with everything. City really stood out from the start—first and foremost, it was the style of play. When I watch this team, the players seem happy, united, and connected.”

Perfect Timing After becoming a pillar of the Portland Thorns and the US National Team, Coffey believes this is the peak moment for her transition to Europe. “I think I’ve reached a point in my career where I feel ready and established as a professional. I feel it’s the right time to really challenge myself in this way,” she added.

Upcoming Debut and Big Fixtures Coffey could make her debut as early as this weekend. Manchester City are preparing for two crucial cup fixtures that could define their season:

  • FA Women’s Cup (4th Round): Bournemouth vs Manchester City – Sunday, Jan 18.
  • FA Women’s League Cup (Semi-final): Manchester City vs Chelsea – Wednesday, Jan 21.

The clash against Chelsea on Wednesday is particularly significant, as it pits the two heavyweights of English football against each other for a spot in the League Cup final.
