With Michael Carrick returning to a back-four system, the Portuguese winger has emerged as the ‘dream target’ to lead United’s new era.

Manchester United are reportedly accelerating plans to bring AC Milan superstar Rafael Leão to Old Trafford. Following the departure of Ruben Amorim and his specialized wing-back system, the Red Devils are reverting to a traditional 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 formation, creating a desperate need for a world-class left winger.

Milan’s Changing Stance While Leão has been the face of the Rossoneri since 2019, reports from GiveMeSport and Daily Mail suggest that Milan are now “open to negotiations.” The Italian giants are analyzing a potential sale to fund a broader squad overhaul, with a price tag estimated at around €80 million (£67m).

The INEOS Shortlist Leão isn’t the only name on United’s radar, but he is certainly the most “glamorous.” The club’s recruitment team has reportedly narrowed their search down to three elite options for the left flank:

  • Rafael Leão (Milan): The primary target for his pace and Serie A pedigree.
  • Iliman Ndiaye (Everton): A Premier League-proven alternative who has excelled this season.
  • Tyrique George (Chelsea): The high-potential youngster available for a smaller fee.

A Career at its Peak At 26, Rafael Leão is in his prime. Since joining Milan from Lille, he has amassed over 200 appearances, leading the club to a Scudetto and establishing himself as a regular for the Portuguese national team. His current contract runs until 2028, but the lure of the Premier League and United’s financial power could prove decisive.

Strategic Impact: For United, signing Leão would represent a major statement of intent, especially after the loan departures of Marcus Rashford (Barcelona) and Jadon Sancho (Aston Villa) earlier this season.
