Al-Nassr have resolved the future of goalkeeper Bento, clearing the way for the Saudi club to announce a new foreign signing during the current transfer window. The Brazilian shot-stopper is set to join Genoa in Italy after the two clubs finalized his departure.
After months of speculation, Al-Nassr decided to part ways with Bento, who lost his place following the arrival of head coach Jorge Jesus. Club officials believe the goalkeeper did not justify occupying a foreign-player slot, especially after a series of costly errors during his time in Saudi Arabia.
Departure Creates Room Under Foreign-Player Quota
Under Saudi Pro League regulations, clubs are allowed up to 10 foreign players, with eight eligible for matchday selection. Bento’s imminent exit therefore frees up a valuable spot in Al-Nassr’s squad, giving the club the flexibility to recruit another high-profile international player.
With the winter window now open, Al-Nassr have been actively exploring options to strengthen their roster, particularly in areas that can offer greater attacking and creative output.
Investment Fund Authorizes New Signing
According to Asharq Al-Awsat, Al-Nassr’s board received official authorization from the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund (PIF) on Saturday, January 10, to complete the signing of a new foreign player. The approval is reportedly aimed at bringing in a midfielder, signaling a strategic shift toward reinforcing the team’s offensive capabilities.
The plan is to use the newly available foreign slot not for a direct replacement in goal, but to add a player who can make a stronger impact in the final third.
Al-Nassr Seek Turnaround in Title Race
The move comes at a critical point in Al-Nassr’s season. Cristiano Ronaldo and his teammates are currently enduring a difficult spell, having suffered two consecutive defeats in the Saudi Pro League. After previously leading the table, the club now trails Al-Hilal by four points.
Despite the setback, head coach Jorge Jesus remains confident that his side can mount a comeback and challenge for the league title in the second half of the campaign.
Season So Far: Strong Record, No Silverware Yet
So far this season, Al-Nassr have played 23 matches, recording 18 wins, two draws, and three defeats. While they were eliminated from the King’s Cup, the club remains in contention for both the Saudi Pro League and the AFC Champions League Two.
However, the pressure is mounting. Since the arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo, Al-Nassr have yet to secure an official trophy and recently lost the Saudi Super Cup on penalties.
