Rodrygo digs his own grave at Real Madrid and could miss the next World Cup

Rodrygo’s situation at Real Madrid is becoming increasingly complicated. Once seen as a cornerstone for the Merengues and Brazil, the 23-year-old has slipped down the pecking order and now risks missing out on the 2026 World Cup if things don’t change soon.
From Rising Star to Bench Role
Since the Club World Cup, Rodrygo has struggled for minutes. His request to play exclusively as a left winger directly competing with Vinícius Júnior has left him on the bench, with just 81 minutes played this season under Xabi Alonso.
Despite strong interest from Liverpool, Arsenal, Manchester City and Tottenham, the striker opted to stay in Madrid during the last transfer window. However, his role has not improved.
Ancelotti’s Clear Message
Brazil coach Carlo Ancelotti left Rodrygo out of the latest Seleção squad, sending a strong warning about his lack of playing time. When asked about the forward, the Italian was blunt:
“I haven’t spoken to Rodrygo. If he wants an explanation, he can call me. He knows how to reach me.”
The exclusion highlights how far Rodrygo’s stock has fallen not only at Real Madrid but also with the Brazilian national team.
World Cup Dreams in Danger
With the 2026 World Cup approaching, Rodrygo’s future looks uncertain. Ancelotti has already turned to other attacking options such as Gabriel Martinelli, Luiz Henrique and Samuel Lino, all of whom are making strong cases for a permanent spot.
Unless Rodrygo changes clubs in January or wins back his place in Madrid, he could face the unthinkable: watching the World Cup from home.
