Real Madrid close to signing Liverpool’s Ibrahima Konaté on a free transfer

Real Madrid is edging closer to a deal with French defender Ibrahima Konaté, whose contract with Liverpool expires at the end of next season. The 26-year-old could arrive at the Bernabéu on a free transfer, making him one of the biggest defensive bargains in Europe.

Verbal Agreement in the Works

According to TeamTalk, Madrid is already negotiating the terms of a verbal agreement, which could soon turn into a formal pre-contract. From January onward, Konaté will be legally allowed to negotiate with clubs outside England, putting Liverpool under pressure to act quickly.

Manager Arne Slot wants to avoid a repeat of Trent Alexander-Arnold’s contractual uncertainty and has urged the club to resolve the matter before the winter transfer window.

Liverpool’s Attempts to Renew

The Reds have not given up. Negotiations with Konaté and his representatives are ongoing, but the Frenchman has reportedly rejected three renewal offers since last fall. Despite this, Liverpool remains hopeful of striking a deal before the end of the year.

Madrid’s Market Strategy

For Real Madrid, Konaté represents a rare market opportunity a world-class defender available without a transfer fee. The club is keeping a close eye on the situation but has no plans to act aggressively toward Liverpool.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano confirmed that Konaté is “at the top of Madrid’s shortlist” for defensive reinforcements in 2026. However, the final decision will depend on the player and whether Liverpool can change his mind in the coming months.
