Manchester United cuts costs with André Onana’s departure and goalkeeper secures salary increase at Trabzonspor

Manchester United will reduce their wage bill after agreeing to loan André Onana to Turkish side Trabzonspor. While the Premier League club saves £3.7 million (€4.3m / R$27m) in salaries, the Cameroonian goalkeeper is set to earn more thanks to bonus incentives in Turkey.

United saves, Onana earns more

Journalist Shaun Connolly confirmed that United will no longer cover Onana’s annual wages, significantly reducing the club’s expenses. According to Fabrizio Romano, Trabzonspor structured the deal with performance-related bonuses, ensuring the goalkeeper’s overall income rises compared to his Old Trafford deal.

The arrangement was key to convincing Onana to make the switch, as the 28-year-old prepares for a fresh start after a turbulent spell in Manchester. The keeper is expected in Turkey this week for medical tests before being officially unveiled at Papara Park.

Why did Onana lose his place at Manchester United?

  • Onana joined United in 2023 after a standout season with Inter Milan, where he helped the Italian side reach the Champions League final. However, expectations quickly turned into disappointment.
  • Inconsistent form and costly errors undermined his debut season.
  • Manager Ruben Amorim lost confidence in the goalkeeper.
  • United prioritized stability, accelerating the search for a replacement.

With the arrival of Amorim in 2024–25, the club made it clear that Onana was no longer part of their long-term plans.

The “new Courtois” arrives at Old Trafford

Manchester United moved quickly to secure Senne Lammens, a 23-year-old Belgian goalkeeper hailed as the “new Courtois.” After impressing last season, he is seen by the club’s hierarchy as the long-term solution between the posts.

The signing confirms United’s commitment to rebuilding, while Onana seeks to rediscover his best form in the Turkish Süper Lig.
