Jorge Jesus explains Bento’s absence from Al-Nassr and denies rumors of his departure

Al-Nassr coach Jorge Jesus clarified why Brazilian goalkeeper Bento was left out of the Saudi Pro League opener, dismissing speculation about his exit.

Foreign Player Limit Behind Decision

Bento was absent from Al-Nassr’s debut match against Al-Taawoun, fueling rumors of a transfer. However, Jorge Jesus stressed the decision was purely tactical:

“I’m very happy to have two outstanding goalkeepers. Nawaf is one of the best in Saudi Arabia, and Bento is the goalkeeper of Brazil’s national team. Today, I chose Nawaf because I wanted to include another foreign outfield player,” explained the Portuguese coach.

The Saudi Pro League allows only eight foreign players per match, despite clubs being able to register up to 10 across the season. This forced Jesus to rotate his lineup a strategy he previously used at Al-Hilal.

Bento Under Pressure at Al-Nassr

Signed for €18 million in September 2024, Bento has struggled to secure a starting role. His costly performance in the Saudi Super Cup final against Al-Ahli where he failed to save a penalty sparked criticism.

According to Goal, even Cristiano Ronaldo expressed frustration with Bento’s display, adding to doubts within the board about his long-term role. The pressure is intensified by the limited quota for foreign players in Saudi squads.

Still Valued by Brazil

Despite club-level uncertainty, Bento retains the trust of Brazil coach Carlo Ancelotti, who called him up for the September qualifiers against Chile (Sept 4) and Bolivia (Sept 9). He will compete with Alisson (Liverpool) and Hugo Souza (Corinthians) for the starting spot.

At 26, Bento’s career sits at a crossroads: balancing domestic instability at Al-Nassr with international prestige in the Seleção. Jorge Jesus insists competition is healthy but for Bento, the challenge will be turning it into consistency.
