Galatasaray close to signing Manchester City’s Ilkay Gündogan

The Turkish giants are pushing for a deal with the 34-year-old midfielder, who would earn €5 million per season in Istanbul.

Galatasaray make their move

Galatasaray are on the verge of completing one of the most high-profile transfers of the summer. According to Turkish journalist Yağız Sabuncuoğlu, the Süper Lig champions have offered €5 million per year to lure Ilkay Gündogan away from Manchester City.

City’s board is reportedly open to the move once personal terms are agreed, with Turkish media describing the deal as “very close.”

Contract situation at Manchester City

Gündogan, 34, is currently under contract with Manchester City until June 2026. However, his wages could be a stumbling block. According to Capology, the German international earns around £11 million per year (€12.9m / R$81m) in Manchester more than double what Galatasaray are offering.

If he accepts the deal, Gündogan would take a significant pay cut to join the Turkish side.

Career at City and recent seasons

  • Joined City in 2016, becoming Pep Guardiola’s first signing.
  • Played a decisive role in the club’s domestic dominance and their 2023 Champions League triumph.
  • Spent one season at Barcelona (2023/24) before returning to Manchester.
  • Last campaign: 54 matches, 5 goals, 6 assists.

Gündogan remains highly valued for his leadership and versatility, but his long-term future at the Etihad is now under question.

Galatasaray’s ambitious project

The Turkish champions are building a squad with European ambitions. They recently brought in Ederson from City, while Gianluigi Donnarumma arrived to take over as first-choice goalkeeper. Adding Gündogan would further boost their midfield experience and Champions League pedigree.
