FIFA confirms 2025 Intercontinental Cup schedule with PSG already in the final

FIFA has unveiled the dates and venues for the 2025 Intercontinental Cup, the revamped version of the former Club World Cup. The tournament kicks off this Sunday, September 14, with the Champions League winner PSG awaiting in the final.

Opening Rounds and Key Matches

The competition begins in Cairo, where Pyramids FC will face Auckland City on September 14. The winner will then travel to Jeddah on September 23 to take on Al-Ahli, with the victor securing a spot in the semifinals.

In December, Cruz Azul will play the 2025 Copa Libertadores champion on the 10th, with the location yet to be confirmed. The winner advances to the semifinal, set for December 13, where they will face the Middle Eastern qualifier (Al-Ahli/Pyramids/Auckland City).

The final will take place on December 17, featuring PSG against the semifinal winner. As per FIFA’s new rules, the Champions League winner automatically enters the final, giving European champions a direct route to contest the title.

New Format and Historical Context

FIFA’s overhaul transforms the traditional Club World Cup into the Intercontinental Cup, emphasizing continental representation. Key changes include:

  • The UEFA Champions League winner enters directly into the final.
  • South American champions now play an additional match, no longer starting in the semifinals.
  • The competition brings together champions from all continents, increasing the stakes for clubs outside Europe.

Last year, Real Madrid claimed the inaugural title under this new structure by defeating Pachuca in the final. Meanwhile, Libertadores representatives Botafogo were eliminated before the semifinals by the Mexicans, who went on to beat Al-Ahly.

Why This Matters

The Intercontinental Cup now provides clubs a global stage before the end of the year, blending high-stakes international competition with regional pride. With PSG already seeded in the final, the tournament promises exciting matchups, showcasing emerging football markets and historic clubs alike.
