FIFA changes its position and accepts Laporte’s transfer from Al-Nassr to Athletic Bilbao

Athletic Bilbao has confirmed that FIFA has accepted the transfer of Aymeric Laporte from Al-Nassr, ending a week-long saga that initially stalled due to documentation issues. The Spanish defender is returning to the club where he was discovered and first made a name for himself internationally.
FIFA Issues Clearance for Laporte
Athletic Bilbao announced on Thursday (11) that FIFA authorized the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) to obtain the International Transfer Certificate (ITC) from the Saudi Arabian Football Federation. Once issued, Laporte’s registration will be officially completed.
The case had been delayed after Al-Nassr reportedly postponed sending the ITC. Bilbao had appealed to the RFEF for assistance, but FIFA initially vetoed the signing.
Laporte’s History with Athletic Bilbao
Laporte began his career at Athletic Bilbao, joining the U-19 squad after moving from French football. He turned professional in 2012 before transferring to Manchester City in 2017.
During his first stint, Laporte helped Bilbao win the Spanish Super Cup and was runner-up in the 2014/2015 Copa del Rey, losing 3-1 to Barcelona. His return marks a homecoming for the defender, who brings international experience and leadership back to the Basque club.
Upcoming Match and La Liga Success
Athletic Bilbao will take the field on Saturday (13) at 1:30 pm (Brasília time) against Alavés at San Mamés Stadium. The team has a 100% winning record in La Liga so far this season, aiming to extend its lead over Real Madrid, who face Real Sociedad in the same round.
Laporte’s addition strengthens the squad’s defense and adds depth as Athletic Bilbao looks to maintain its strong start in the Spanish Championship.
