Éder Militão’s return at Real Madrid boosts hopes for Brazil’s defense under Ancelotti

Real Madrid defender Éder Militão has returned to action in La Liga, and his impressive form has revived hopes that he could become a key figure for the Brazilian national team under Carlo Ancelotti.
After recovering from a long-term injury, Militão featured in two of Madrid’s opening three league matches this season, delivering standout performances against Osasuna and Mallorca. Alongside Dean Huijsen, he helped the team concede just one goal, quickly regaining his reputation as a reliable and dynamic centre-back.
Brazil’s defensive struggles
The Seleção have struggled with defensive instability in recent years, with Ancelotti and his predecessors Dorival Júnior and Fernando Diniz unable to find a settled backline. Militão’s return offers Brazil a chance to form a solid partnership with Marquinhos, combining European experience and leadership ahead of the next World Cup.
Although he was not called up for the September fixtures against Chile and Bolivia, the expectation is that Militão will soon regain his spot once he builds up rhythm and consistency. Lille’s Alexsandro has also been monitored as an option, but Militão’s top-level pedigree makes him a natural candidate to reclaim his place.
Key asset for Real Madrid
At club level, Militão has impressed Xabi Alonso with attributes such as pace, ball-playing ability, and defensive awareness. His strong start to the 2025–26 campaign has also caught the attention of Madrid fans, who see him as an indispensable piece of the backline moving forward.
Brazil’s upcoming matches
Even without Militão, Brazil have two key qualifiers scheduled. The team faces Chile on Thursday (Sept 4) at the Maracanã and then travels to Bolivia on Tuesday (Sept 9) to close the FIFA international window.
These matches will mark Ancelotti’s third set of games in charge of the Seleção. The Italian coach has yet to repeat a starting lineup and is expected to use this window to fine-tune his tactical approach as preparations for the World Cup intensify.
