Donnarumma praises Luis Enrique despite troubled negotiations to leave PSG and sign with City

Gianluigi Donnarumma is officially a Manchester City player. The Italian goalkeeper signed a five-year contract with the Premier League champions, putting an end to his stint at Paris Saint-Germain. Despite a turbulent departure, he left words of praise for former coach Luis Enrique.
Praise for Luis Enrique
In an interview with Fichajes.com, Donnarumma was asked about his relationship with the Spanish manager. His response was conciliatory:
“Luis Enrique? I’ve always had an excellent relationship with him. I appreciated his openness with me.”
Even after being dropped on the eve of the UEFA Super Cup, the 26-year-old insisted he held no grudges. “Disappointed? I don’t know, every coach has to make their own decisions,” he added.
Why Donnarumma Left PSG
Behind the goalkeeper’s exit were multiple issues. A contract renewal was never finalized, he was left out of the Super Cup final against Tottenham, and reports pointed to unease in the locker room.
Another turning point was the arrival of Lucas Chevalier from Lille. Preferred by the coaching staff in decisive moments, the French goalkeeper effectively replaced Donnarumma, creating tension with the Italian’s agent.
Raiola’s Harsh Criticism
Enzo Raiola, Donnarumma’s representative, publicly criticized PSG after Chevalier was chosen for the Super Cup. He accused the club of a lack of respect toward his client.
From that point on, Donnarumma was no longer part of PSG’s Ligue 1 squad, and the path was cleared for his transfer to Manchester City.
Heroic Exit Despite Tensions
Despite the friction, Donnarumma leaves PSG as a club legend. He was the hero of the only Champions League title in the club’s history and was celebrated as an idol by fans.
More Exits at PSG
The summer window was marked by a wave of departures. Randal Kolo Muani joined Tottenham, while Marco Asensio left for Fenerbahçe after a spell at Aston Villa.
