Dissatisfied Hansi Flick demands Barcelona sign elite defender after Rayo setback

The German coach has made it clear: Barça must strengthen the defense in the January transfer window.
Flick pressures Barcelona after 1-1 draw
Barcelona coach Hansi Flick has urged the board to act in the transfer market after the team’s disappointing 1-1 draw against Rayo Vallecano in La Liga. The German strategist believes the current defensive system is not strong enough to sustain the club’s ambitions and is demanding a top-level defender as a priority in January.
According to Spanish journalist Montero, Flick is particularly concerned about the lack of leadership at the back since Iñigo Martínez’s departure, which left a significant gap that has yet to be filled.
Financial crisis limits Barça’s options
Despite the coach’s demands, Barcelona continues to face a severe financial crisis, which has restricted their moves in the market. Last summer, the club only managed to sign Joan Garcia and Marcus Rashford, the latter reportedly struggling to build chemistry with young star Lamine Yamal.
For Flick, however, reinforcements in defense are non-negotiable. While Pau Cubarsí shows promise, his youth prevents him from being a true leader. Ronald Araújo’s inconsistency and the lack of solidity from Christensen and Eric García further complicate the situation.
Who could Barcelona target?
Barcelona’s dream signing remains Alessandro Bastoni, Inter Milan’s defensive leader. However, a January deal is seen as nearly impossible given Inter’s unwillingness to negotiate.
Another name on the radar is Ibrahima Konaté, whose contract with Liverpool is running down. From January 2026, the Frenchman could sign a pre-contract, making him an attractive option for President Joan Laporta.
In the short term, Barça are expected to prioritize defenders already playing in La Liga, a strategy that could reduce costs and speed up adaptation. Sporting director Deco will spend the coming months evaluating possible reinforcements, with potential sales expected to open space for new signings.
