Barcelona rules out Frenkie de Jong against Valencia and fears absence in Champions League clash with Newcastle

Hansi Flick loses a key midfielder again as injuries continue to haunt Frenkie de Jong, who could also miss a decisive European duel.

Barcelona opts for caution with De Jong

Barcelona has decided not to take risks with Frenkie de Jong’s recovery and will keep him out of the squad for the La Liga match against Valencia, scheduled for Sunday (14). According to Diario AS, the Dutchman is also a doubt for the Champions League clash with Newcastle on Thursday (18).

The decision reflects the board’s strategy of preserving the midfielder, who has struggled with recurring muscle problems since arriving at the club. Hansi Flick considers De Jong crucial for balance in midfield, but the staff prefers to avoid aggravating the injury.

Injury history raises alarms

This latest problem represents De Jong’s 13th injury since joining Barcelona in 2019. According to Transfermarkt, the Dutch international has already missed 70 matches and spent 377 days sidelined between Barça and the Netherlands.

The high number of setbacks explains the club’s cautious stance. Losing him long-term could compromise both domestic and European campaigns.

Contract situation adds uncertainty

De Jong’s current deal runs until June 2026, but starting in January he could sign a pre-contract with another club if no renewal is agreed. Barcelona want to extend his stay, yet the midfielder is said to be weighing up future options, amid continued injury setbacks and external interest.

What’s next for Barcelona

  • vs. Valencia (La Liga): Sunday, September 14.
  • vs. Newcastle (Champions League): Thursday, September 18, in England.

De Jong’s absence will be a major test for Flick’s midfield, which must find stability without one of its most reliable players.
