Barcelona risks losing Bernardo Silva to Benfica as pre-contract negotiations progress

Barcelona’s long-standing dream of signing Bernardo Silva could collapse. The Portuguese star, who is nearing the end of his contract with Manchester City, is reportedly edging closer to a return to Benfica, the club where he began his career.

Benfica Move Gains Momentum

According to Record and relayed by TEAMtalk, João Noronha Lopes, candidate for Benfica’s presidency, has opened advanced talks with Silva’s representatives. The plan is to secure a pre-contract agreement as early as January 2026, which would pave the way for the midfielder to return on a free transfer after the World Cup.

Benfica coach Bruno Lage fueled speculation, stating:

“From what I know of Bernardo and his motivation, he will soon be a Benfica player, regardless of who is president.”

Blow for Barcelona

Barcelona president Joan Laporta has long considered Silva a priority signing. However, financial limitations have stalled the Catalan club’s pursuit. Meanwhile, Benfica’s strong ties with their academy graduate and Silva’s emotional connection to Lisbon could prove decisive.

At 31 years old, the Portuguese international remains one of Europe’s most coveted creative midfielders. Last season for Manchester City, he featured in 52 matches, scoring six goals and delivering five assists.

A Return to His Roots

Despite being a Benfica academy product, Silva only played three senior games for the club before joining Monaco in 2014. A comeback in 2026 would mark a full-circle moment in his career.

Barcelona’s Alternative Target

Even if they lose Silva, Barcelona are not giving up on Manchester City talents. Local reports suggest the Catalans are monitoring Brazilian winger Savinho, who was close to joining Tottenham during the last transfer window.
