Akanji explains how Guardiola influenced his move from Manchester City to Inter Milan

Manuel Akanji has explained how Pep Guardiola influenced his decision to leave Manchester City for Inter Milan. The Swiss defender joined the Italian giants on loan with a €15 million purchase option, after being told by his coach that regular playing time would be difficult at the Etihad.

Guardiola’s Honest Talk About Competition

In an interview shared by Fabrizio Romano, Akanji revealed that Guardiola was upfront about the situation within City’s defensive lineup.

“There were six central defenders in the squad. Pep Guardiola told us openly that it wouldn’t be easy for anyone to get regular playing time,” Akanji said. “It wasn’t ideal, but I was well aware of the competition for places.”

With City stacked in defense, the 30-year-old was ultimately left out of Guardiola’s Premier League squad for the season—prompting his departure.

Inter Milan Loan Deal

Akanji has joined Inter on a season-long loan worth €2 million (R$12 million). The agreement includes a €15 million (R$95 million) purchase option, giving the Nerazzurri the chance to secure him permanently next summer.

Considering his market value sits around €25 million (R$159 million) according to SofaScore, the Italian club could land a bargain if he impresses.

A Fresh Start in Italy

Wearing the No. 25 shirt, Akanji will bring experience and reliability to Inter’s backline. Under Guardiola, the defender grew frustrated by his lack of minutes, but at Inter he is expected to slot straight into Simone Inzaghi’s plans and add immediate depth.

City’s Focus Turns to Derby Clash

While Akanji embarks on his Serie A journey, Guardiola prepares Manchester City for their next test—a Premier League derby against Manchester United on September 14, kicking off at 12:30 p.m. (Brasília time).
