Van Dijk demands signing of new striker after Darwin Núñez leaves Liverpool for Al-Hilal

Liverpool captain says squad needs more depth up front

Virgil van Dijk has urged Liverpool to sign a new striker following the €53 million departure of Darwin Núñez to Saudi side Al-Hilal. The Dutch defender believes the team lacks depth in the central forward position and needs reinforcements to remain competitive this season.

Speaking to Touchline, Van Dijk expressed disappointment over losing Núñez and emphasised the importance of adding another attacking option.

“We need a new striker. We just lost Darwin Núñez… I think there’s always room for a striker to strengthen us,” the Liverpool captain said.

Ekitiké the Only Recognised Centre-Forward

Liverpool recently signed Hugo Ekitiké, who is expected to start in the No. 9 role, with Cody Gakpo occasionally filling in. While the squad boasts several wingers including Gakpo and Ben Doak Van Dijk’s comments highlight the shortage of natural centre-forwards after Núñez’s exit.

Analysts note that to compete for major trophies such as the Champions League, Liverpool will need more attacking options to avoid over-reliance on a single striker.

Isak Transfer Talks Progressing

The Reds are actively exploring the market, with Newcastle’s Alexander Isak emerging as the top target. The Swedish international is reportedly keen on a move to Anfield, and negotiations are ongoing.

According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, the deal could exceed €165 million (converted from R$900 million) and may be finalised in the coming days, despite Newcastle’s reluctance to part with their star forward.
