Tottenham tries to bypass Milan and makes an offer for Manchester City defender Manuel Akanji

Swiss defender is expected to leave Pep Guardiola’s squad amid strong transfer interest

Spurs enter the race

Tottenham Hotspur have submitted a formal offer to sign Manuel Akanji from Manchester City, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano. The 30-year-old Swiss defender, who has lost space under Pep Guardiola, is among the names considered to strengthen Spurs’ backline this season.

The London club has already shown interest in Nathan Aké and Piero Hincapié, but no deals have advanced. Akanji is now viewed as a realistic option.

Milan in pole position

Despite Tottenham’s approach, AC Milan remain ahead in the negotiations. The Rossoneri are in advanced talks with City and are prepared to pay around €15 million (R$94.8 million). An agreement between the clubs is already close, with only final details pending regarding the player’s contract.

Crystal Palace have also tried to sign the Swiss international, making an offer of similar value, according to The Sun.

Akanji’s career and titles

Manuel Akanji began his professional career in Switzerland with FC Winterthur and Basel, later moving to Borussia Dortmund, where he stood out in the Bundesliga. In 2022, he joined Manchester City, becoming part of Guardiola’s highly competitive squad.

Since arriving in England, Akanji has lifted seven major trophies, including two Premier League titles, the Champions League, and the FIFA Club World Cup. In total, he has made 136 appearances for City, scoring five goals.
