Tottenham seeks to repeat Atlético Madrid’s historic Super Cup defeat to PSG

Tottenham will aim to match Atlético Madrid’s 2018 feat when they face Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Super Cup final this Wednesday (13) at 16:00. That year, Diego Simeone’s Europa League-winning side overcame Real Madrid, the reigning Champions League champions, with a 4-2 victory.

Brazilian-born Spanish striker Diego Costa led the charge with two goals, while Saúl Ñíguez now at Flamengo also found the net. Atlético remains the last Europa League champion to topple a Champions League winner in the competition.

This time, the challenge for Tottenham is formidable. PSG arrives as the Champions League titleholder and one of the most dominant squads in Europe, having already bolstered their roster for the upcoming season.

Super Cup History Favors the Giants

Since its first edition in 1973 when Ajax defeated AC Milan the UEFA Super Cup has been largely dominated by Europe’s elite clubs. Real Madrid leads the all-time winners list with six titles, followed by Barcelona and Milan (five each), Liverpool (four), Atlético Madrid (three), and several clubs with two victories, including Bayern Munich, Chelsea, Ajax, Valencia, Juventus, and Anderlecht.

Sevilla holds a unique record: despite winning the Europa League seven times, they have reached the Super Cup final on seven occasions but lifted the trophy only once, in 2006, after a 3-0 win over Barcelona.

Prize Money on the Line

This year’s champion will secure approximately €4.5 million (around R$28 million), while the runner-up will earn €3.5 million (around R$22 million).
