Ruben Amorim says Manchester United is not ready for the Champions League

Portuguese coach calls for patience after poor start to the season and highlights squad’s defensive issues.
United not at European level yet
Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim delivered a blunt assessment of his team’s moment. Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday (26), the Portuguese coach admitted that the Red Devils are not yet prepared to compete in the Champions League, stressing the need for patience and a stronger foundation.
“Right now, we’re not ready to play in Europe. To handle tough Champions League matches and then compete in the Premier League, we need time to grow as a team,” Amorim said ahead of the English League Cup clash.
Pressure grows after disappointing campaign
The statement comes after a turbulent year. United finished 15th in the Premier League last season and missed out on a European place after losing to Tottenham in the Europa League final. The disappointing start to the new campaign has only increased the scrutiny on Amorim’s work.
This season, United are still winless. After a 1-0 home defeat to Arsenal and a 1-1 draw with Fulham, questions are mounting about the team’s progress.
Defensive problems and call for commitment
Amorim highlighted defensive frailties as a key issue.
“The matches are very competitive. We need time to build a foundation. There will come a moment when competing in Europe will be vital for everyone, but first we need to grow,” he explained.
The coach also demanded more commitment from his players:
“The squad needs to fight for their positions. From there, everything can change.”
Team news: Mazraoui close to return
Amorim provided an update on Noussair Mazraoui, who was injured during preseason.
“Maybe he’ll be back next week, we’ll see. We’re finalizing some work with him to make sure he doesn’t have any other problems,” the coach confirmed.
