Parisians fight back from two goals down to win 4-3 in shootout thriller

Paris Saint-Germain wrote a new chapter in their history by winning the UEFA Super Cup for the first time, defeating Tottenham Hotspur 4-3 on penalties after a dramatic 2-2 draw in regular time. The French champions trailed 2-0 deep into the second half, but late goals from Lee Kang-In and Gonçalo Ramos forced a shootout, where goalkeeper Chevalier emerged as the hero.

Tottenham Takes Control Early

Tottenham, under Danish coach Thomas Frank, began with a disciplined defensive setup but looked the more dangerous side on the break. The partnership of Richarlison and Mohammed Kudus created early threats, with the Brazilian forcing a sharp save from Chevalier and Bentancur heading just over.

PSG’s best moments in the first half came from wide play, with Doué and Ousmane Dembélé delivering dangerous crosses, but Spurs goalkeeper Vicario kept them at bay. The breakthrough came in the 38th minute, when Van de Ven pounced on a rebound after João Palhinha’s shot was saved, putting Spurs 1-0 up.

Romero Doubles the Lead

Just two minutes into the second half, Tottenham extended their advantage. Pape Matar Sarr delivered a pinpoint free kick, and Cristian Romero met it with a powerful header past Chevalier to make it 2-0. At that point, Spurs looked in control and poised for their first Super Cup win.

PSG’s Late Fightback

The momentum shifted after Luis Enrique introduced Fabián Ruiz, giving PSG more control in midfield. In the 84th minute, Vitinha recovered a loose ball and set up Lee Kang-In, who curled a precise shot into the corner to cut the deficit.

The equalizer came deep into stoppage time. Dembélé delivered a quick pass and cross to Gonçalo Ramos, who finished from close range to stun Tottenham and send the match to penalties.

Chevalier the Shootout Hero

The shootout began poorly for PSG, with Vitinha missing their first attempt while Spurs converted their opening two. But Chevalier saved from Van de Ven and later saw Tel miss wide, giving the Parisians the edge. Lee Kang-In and Nuno Mendes converted under pressure, sealing PSG’s 4-3 shootout victory and their maiden UEFA Super Cup triumph.

With this win, PSG adds a long-awaited European honor to their trophy collection, showing resilience and big-match mentality just weeks into the new season.
