PSG and Tottenham ready for UEFA Super Cup clash with nine Ballon d’Or nominees

The first major European trophy of the 2024/25 season will be decided next Wednesday, 13 August, when Paris Saint-Germain and Tottenham Hotspur meet in the UEFA Super Cup. Kick-off is scheduled for 21:00 CET at a neutral venue, with the Champions League winners facing the Europa League holders.
Nine Ballon d’Or Nominees — All from PSG
The fixture brings together not only two continental champions but also some of football’s most celebrated names. Remarkably, all nine Ballon d’Or nominees set to feature in the match are from PSG: Ousmane Dembélé, Gianluigi Donnarumma, Désiré Doué, Achraf Hakimi, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Nuno Mendes, João Neves, Fabián Ruiz, and Vitinha.
The winners of the 2025 Ballon d’Or will be announced in September, making the Super Cup an opportunity for several contenders to further strengthen their case.
PSG’s Dominance in Europe
Luis Enrique’s side enters the match as overwhelming favourites after conquering the Champions League and claiming every major European title available last season despite a shock defeat in the Club World Cup final.
Ousmane Dembélé, viewed by many as the frontrunner for the Ballon d’Or, had a standout campaign with 35 goals and 14 assists in 53 appearances. Midfield dynamo Vitinha also impressed, scoring eight times and assisting five in 59 games.
Tottenham’s Contrasting Campaign
In stark contrast, Tottenham’s season was mixed. While they secured the Europa League title, they struggled domestically, finishing 17th in the Premier League and narrowly avoiding relegation. The North London club does not have a single player among the Ballon d’Or nominees.
Donnarumma’s Potential Farewell
The Super Cup could also serve as the final PSG appearance for Gianluigi Donnarumma. The Italian goalkeeper is in the last year of his contract, with renewal talks stalled. According to French press reports, he has been given the go-ahead to find a new club, with Manchester United emerging as the most likely destination.
