Marquinhos renews with PSG and prepares for 13th season as club captain

Brazilian defender rejects Gulf offers, remains cornerstone of Parisian defense
Marquinhos has officially renewed his contract with Paris Saint-Germain, committing his future to the club until 2028 and confirming his leadership role in what will be his 13th season with the reigning European champions.
The 31-year-old defender, who joined PSG from AS Roma in 2013, turned down lucrative proposals from clubs in the Persian Gulf to stay in the French capital. According to club sources, Marquinhos remains focused on maintaining his position as captain and defensive leader under Luis Enrique’s management.
Facing New Competition at the Back
Despite his experience and historic status, Marquinhos is expected to face increased competition in PSG’s backline this season. The club is reportedly close to signing Ilya Zabarni, a 22-year-old Ukrainian defender from Bournemouth, who is seen as a long-term reinforcement.
Still, the Brazilian has consistently started in PSG’s most important matches including the club’s 5-0 win over Inter Milan in the Champions League final and the 3-0 loss to Chelsea in the Club World Cup.
PSG Legend in the Making
Marquinhos continues to etch his name in PSG history. In March 2024, he broke Jean-Marc Pilorget’s longstanding club record of 435 appearances, and has since extended the total to 491 matches across all competitions.
If he features in PSG’s Ligue 1 opener on August 17 against Nantes, Marquinhos will match Pilorget’s mark of 13 seasons with the club. Only a single season on loan kept Pilorget at the top with 14 years of service.
A Symbol of Loyalty and Longevity
Known for his leadership and consistency, Marquinhos has become a symbol of PSG’s identity in the modern era. His renewed commitment comes at a pivotal time as the club continues to transition following the departure of key players in recent years.
With his contract now secured through 2028, the Brazilian captain will aim to lead PSG in pursuit of further domestic and European success cementing his status as one of the most iconic players in club history.
