Manchester United suffer historic Carabao Cup elimination to Grimsby

Manchester United were dumped out of the Carabao Cup in stunning fashion after losing a marathon penalty shootout 12-11 to fourth-tier Grimsby Town at Blundell Park.
United looked dead and buried after a nightmare first half in which Charles Vernam opened the scoring and ex-Red Devil Tyrell Warren pounced on a huge mistake by returning goalkeeper André Onana.
Bryan Mbeumo pulled one back after the break and Harry Maguire equalised in stoppage time, forcing penalties. But after Matheus Cunha missed his spot-kick and Mbeumo struck the bar in sudden death, the Mariners secured the most famous night in their history, sparking a pitch invasion from jubilant fans.
Amorim under fire
Manager Ruben Amorim faced chants of “sacked in the morning” from Grimsby fans as one of United’s few realistic trophy chances disappeared at the first hurdle. The defeat is already being compared to infamous cup humiliations against MK Dons (2014) and York City (1995) – but this is the first time United have ever lost to a fourth-tier side.
Amorim threw on Bruno Fernandes, Mbeumo and Matthijs de Ligt at half-time, then went all-out attack, but even his £200m strikeforce couldn’t prevent disaster.
Grimsby’s night of glory
For Grimsby, it was a night generations of fans will never forget. Boss David Artell’s side fought with spirit, pressed high and capitalised on Old Trafford nerves, proving worthy of their historic upset.
United’s early-season crisis deepens – while Grimsby’s supporters celebrated one of the greatest nights in their club’s history.
