Manchester City complete permanent signing of Laura Wienroither from Arsenal

City strengthen defense ahead of 2025/26 WSL season opener against Chelsea
Manchester City Women have completed the permanent signing of Laura Wienroither from Arsenal, adding defensive depth as the club looks to bounce back from a disappointing 2024/25 campaign. The Austrian international, who had been on loan with the Cityzens, agreed to a full transfer on Friday (15).
Focus Shifts to Domestic Glory After European Setback
City’s ambitions for the 2025/26 season are firmly domestic after failing to qualify for the UEFA Women’s Champions League. Last season, Gareth Taylor’s side finished fourth in the Women’s Super League (WSL) and crashed out of Europe in the quarter-finals, surrendering a 2-0 first-leg advantage to rivals Chelsea, who overturned the tie with a 3-0 win in the second leg.
The club will now target silverware in the WSL, Women’s FA Cup, and Women’s League Cup all trophies lifted by Chelsea last season.
Wienroither’s Return: “A No-Brainer”
Wienroither, capped over 40 times by Austria, expressed her delight at making her stay permanent.
“It’s a good group of people here. Everyone looks out for each other, and I’m really happy to be staying. When the opportunity came up, I didn’t have to think twice it was a no-brainer,” she told the club’s official channels.
Opening Clash Against Champions
Manchester City kick off their WSL campaign on September 5 against defending champions Chelsea. The match is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. (Brasília time) and will be a key early test of City’s revamped squad.
