Manchester City and Manchester United in the battle for Brighton’s Carlos Baleba

Pep Guardiola eyes the 21-year-old as a potential Rodri successor
The Manchester derby has spilled into the transfer market as both Manchester City and Manchester United pursue Carlos Baleba, Brighton & Hove Albion’s rising midfield star. The 21-year-old Cameroonian has caught the attention of Europe’s top clubs after a standout season under Fabian Hürzeler.
Last season, Baleba made 40 appearances for the Seagulls, impressing with his versatility, physical presence, and composure in possession. Pep Guardiola is reportedly keen on the midfielder, viewing him as a long-term replacement for Rodri and a key addition to maintain City’s dominance both in England and Europe.
Brighton Set Steep Asking Price
According to ESPN, Brighton have placed a €120 million (£102m) price tag on Baleba. The valuation reflects both his importance to the squad and the club’s track record of lucrative player sales, including Moisés Caicedo, Marc Cucurella, Ben White, and Alexis Mac Allister.
The deal is further complicated by a clause entitling Lille, Baleba’s former club, to 20% of any fee above the €30 million paid for his transfer in 2023.
United Also in the Race
Manchester United are also monitoring the situation closely and are preparing an offer in the region of €100 million in a bid to lure the midfielder to Old Trafford. Erik ten Hag’s side see Baleba as a crucial addition to bolster their midfield depth.
Player Focused on Brighton
Despite mounting transfer speculation, Baleba has insisted his focus remains on Brighton’s current campaign. The Douala-born midfielder continues to maintain a professional approach while monitoring developments behind the scenes.
If a deal is completed, Baleba could become one of the most expensive signings in Premier League history, while also stepping into the role of Rodri’s successor at Manchester City.
