Liverpool send James McConnell on loan to Ajax after signing new long-term contract

Liverpool midfielder James McConnell has signed a new five-year contract with the Reds before being loaned to Ajax for the 2025/26 season, according to The Athletic’s David Ornstein.

Loan without purchase option

The 20-year-old will undergo medical tests before being officially announced in the Netherlands. The deal runs for one year and does not include a buy option, as Liverpool wants the player back at Anfield in the future.

McConnell’s trajectory

McConnell made his professional debut in 2023/24 and has already played 13 matches for the first team, providing one assist. This season, he has featured in four games under Arne Slot.

Trained at Liverpool’s academy, the midfielder rose from the U-18s to the U-21s between 2020 and 2023 before joining the senior squad.

Future plans at Anfield

The Reds believe McConnell has the potential to establish himself in midfield once he returns. According to Transfermarkt, the youngster is currently valued at €2 million.
