Newcastle vs Liverpool: Who has more wins in the historic Premier League rivalry?

Newcastle United and Liverpool will meet in the second round of the Premier League, in a clash that promises intensity at St. James’ Park. When it comes to the historical head-to-head, the Reds dominate the record.

Head-to-head record favors Liverpool

The two clubs have faced each other 188 times across all competitions since their first meeting in 1871. Liverpool leads with 93 victories, while Newcastle has 50 wins, and there have been 45 draws.

The Merseyside side has scored 334 goals against the Magpies, conceding 225 in return.

Their most recent encounter, however, went Newcastle’s way: in the League Cup final, goals from Isak and Burn secured a 2-1 win over Liverpool.

The Isak transfer saga

Beyond the pitch, both clubs are linked by the transfer soap opera surrounding Alexander Isak. The Swedish striker has made it clear he wants to play for Liverpool, who have already reached an agreement with the player.

Newcastle, however, insists that the 24-year-old forward is not for sale, rejecting all offers so far. Reports suggest Isak himself requested not to feature for the club until a decision is finalized he won’t even be on the bench against Liverpool.

Deal could break Neymar’s record

If Newcastle accepts negotiations, the deal could surpass €222 million (R$821 million), the amount PSG paid for Neymar in 2018 still the most expensive transfer in football history.

Liverpool are reportedly waiting for a green light from Newcastle to push forward with what could become a record-breaking signing.
