Uruguayan striker leaves Liverpool after underwhelming spell; set to sign a three-year deal with Saudi club

Liverpool has agreed to sell Darwin Núñez to Al-Hilal for £46 million, equivalent to approximately €62 million, according to The Athletic. The 25-year-old Uruguayan forward is expected to travel to Saudi Arabia this week to undergo medical examinations and finalize a three-year contract with the club.

The deal effectively rules Núñez out of Sunday’s (10 August) FA Community Shield final against Crystal Palace. Although Italian side AC Milan also expressed interest, they were unable to match the financial package offered by the Saudi Pro League club.

Liverpool’s Attacking Overhaul Continues

Núñez’s departure is part of a larger reshuffle in Liverpool’s attacking department under new head coach Arne Slot. The club has already signed Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike, while Luis Díaz was sold to Bayern Munich earlier in the summer window.

Liverpool also made headlines with a £150 million bid for Alexander Isak, and recently secured Ekitike for £69 million, moves that signaled the end of Núñez’s time at Anfield.

Núñez Failed to Impress at Anfield

Signed from Benfica in 2022, Núñez arrived with high expectations and a hefty price tag. However, he struggled to find consistent form. In the 2024/25 season, the forward scored just five goals in 30 appearances, drawing criticism from fans and analysts alike.

His inability to adapt to Liverpool’s system and the arrival of new attacking options saw him fall out of favor with Slot, who reportedly placed him on the club’s transferable list earlier this summer.

Move to Saudi Arabia Ends Uneven Premier League Spell

Núñez now follows a growing trend of top European players making the switch to the Saudi Pro League. His move to Al-Hilal gives him a fresh start after an underwhelming stint in the Premier League.

At just 25, the Uruguayan still has time to resurrect his career in a new environment, joining a league that has attracted other high-profile names with its lucrative offers and growing competitiveness.
