Lisandro Martinez ruled out of Arsenal clash as United’s defensive concerns mount

Manchester United will be without Lisandro Martínez for their Premier League opener against Arsenal on Sunday (17), as manager Rúben Amorim confirmed the Argentine centre-back is “not yet ready” to return from a long-term knee injury.

Injury Keeps Martínez Sidelined

The 26-year-old has not played since tearing his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in February against Crystal Palace. After undergoing surgery, he has only recently resumed light training and has yet to receive medical clearance to rejoin full competition.

“Lisandro will not play this Sunday,” Amorim told ESPN, closing the door on a possible last-minute inclusion. His absence deepens United’s defensive challenges heading into a high-stakes match at Old Trafford.

Defensive Options for Amorim

With Martínez unavailable, Harry Maguire and Raphaël Varane are expected to start in central defence, although Victor Lindelöf remains a tactical option. Amorim could also deploy Luke Shaw as a makeshift centre-back, a role he has filled in the past, particularly against teams with quick attacking lines like Arsenal.

Return Timeline Still Unclear

Cruciate ligament injuries often require six to eight months of recovery, but complications can extend that timeline. Amorim stressed the club’s cautious approach: “The focus is on taking good care of him and evaluating with the medical staff. We won’t rush.”

For now, United will have to adapt without one of their most reliable defenders, as supporters hope the back line can hold firm against Arsenal’s early-season challenge.
