Brighton beat Manchester City with second-half comeback at the Amex

Brighton Albion pulled off a shock 2-1 comeback win over Manchester City in the Premier League, with James Milner and Gruda striking after Erling Haaland had put the visitors ahead.
Haaland scores in 100th Premier League appearance
Manchester City looked in control early, with Haaland marking his milestone appearance by firing home in the 33rd minute after Oscar Bobb’s buildup play. The Norwegian striker had already squandered two big chances before finally breaking the deadlock, heading and shooting wide before beating Verbruggen at the third attempt.
City dominated possession but lacked a killer edge to extend their lead, leaving Brighton still in the contest at halftime.
Brighton’s changes spark turnaround
Roberto De Zerbi’s second-half substitutions transformed the match. Gruda, Rutter, Ayari, and Milner came on and immediately gave the hosts more energy.
In the 64th minute, a free kick into the area led to a handball by Matheus Nunes. Veteran Milner stepped up and confidently dispatched the penalty to make it 1-1. The equalizer shifted momentum, and the Seagulls began to push City back.
Gruda seals famous win
City, unusually sloppy in midfield, failed to recover their rhythm. Minteh struck the post before Gruda produced the decisive moment in the 87th minute dribbling past goalkeeper Trafford after a quick one-two to secure Brighton’s first win of the season.
The result means Manchester City have now lost two of their first three Premier League matches under Pep Guardiola, an unwanted first in his reign.
What it means
- Brighton: move up to 10th with 4 points, out of the relegation zone.
- Man City: drop to 12th with 3 points, raising early-season questions.
Both teams now pause for the international break. City face Manchester United in the derby on September 14, while Brighton host Bournemouth the day before.
