Barcelona will give Andreas Christensen another chance with a one-year contract extension

Barcelona are set to give Andreas Christensen another chance by extending his contract for an additional year, despite the Danish defender enduring a season plagued by injuries and inconsistent performances.

According to Sport, the Catalan club had initially placed Christensen on the transfer list, with his departure considered almost certain. However, president Joan Laporta and the board, following the approval of coach Hansi Flick, have decided to keep him at Camp Nou for the 2025/26 season.

Player’s Desire to Stay Matches Club’s Change of Plans

Christensen, who joined Barcelona from Chelsea in 2022, had no intention of leaving Catalonia. The potential contract renewal is seen by the 28-year-old as a fresh opportunity to re-establish himself after a difficult campaign, offering him what he considers a “lifeline” to prove his worth in the squad.

Season Dominated by Injuries

The centre-back began last season as one of Flick’s preferred defensive options but suffered an Achilles tendon injury during a La Liga match against Valencia. That setback sidelined him for 149 days equivalent to 28 matches allowing Iñigo Martínez and Pau Cubarsí to cement themselves as the club’s first-choice partnership.

His return was gradual, often coming off the bench, but disaster struck again when he sustained a muscle injury against Alavés. That kept him out for a further 69 days, missing 15 matches. In total, Christensen featured in only six games, accumulating just 259 minutes of play.

Depth Option for a Competitive Backline

Barcelona’s defensive roster already includes Cubarsí, Martínez, Ronald Araújo and Eric García, making competition for starting roles fierce. Still, Flick’s staff value Christensen’s technical quality and versatility, considering him a useful option for rotation throughout a demanding season.

While the Dane is expected to start the campaign as a substitute, his ability to cover multiple defensive roles could earn him significant playing time. For Christensen, the upcoming season represents a final chance to secure his long-term future at the club.
