Barcelona are negotiating with Tottenham over the sale of Ronald Araújo for €50 million amid interest from Real Madrid

Catalan club seeks to offload Uruguayan defender as fears grow over potential move to rivals Madrid

Barcelona has entered advanced negotiations with Tottenham Hotspur over the potential transfer of Ronald Araújo, amid growing concern that arch-rivals Real Madrid may also be interested in the Uruguayan international.

According to sources cited by Transfer Feed, Tottenham have already begun discussions with the Spanish giants and are prepared to submit a bid in the region of €50 million for the 26-year-old centre-back, who made 25 appearances and scored twice in the 2024/25 season.

Barcelona Eyes Exit Strategy Amid Madrid Threat

Barcelona’s willingness to negotiate stems from internal concerns that Araújo could make a controversial move to Real Madrid a scenario club president Joan Laporta is keen to avoid. To prevent a direct transfer to their biggest rivals, Barça is actively working on a deal with another top European side.

With head coach Hansi Flick favoring alternative defensive setups, Araújo has reportedly seen his importance within the squad diminish. The club sees his sale as an opportunity to reshape its defensive line and boost its financial position.

Tottenham View Araújo as a Key Defensive Target

Tottenham, under manager Ange Postecoglou, believe Araújo could provide a dual solution—covering both central defense and right-back roles. The London club is seeking defensive reinforcements after an inconsistent 2024/25 campaign, and Araújo’s physical presence and versatility make him a prime candidate.

Negotiations remain ongoing, and while no final fee has been set, all parties appear open to concluding the transfer before the end of the summer window.

Lucas Paquetá Also on Spurs’ Radar

In addition to Araújo, Lucas Paquetá has emerged as another target for Tottenham. Recently cleared of match-fixing allegations, the Brazilian midfielder is also attracting interest from Manchester City and Flamengo. His future, however, remains uncertain until the second half of 2025.
