Barcelona are competing with Arsenal and Chelsea for Ian Subiabre, but refuse to pay the release clause

Barcelona have entered the race to sign River Plate prodigy Ian Subiabre, but negotiations are already hitting a roadblock as the Spanish giants refuse to pay his £23 million release clause.
Laporta Meets With Agent
According to journalist Eduardo Burgos, president Joan Laporta has met several times with the player’s agent, Claudio Cannigia, to discuss a possible transfer. Despite Barcelona’s concrete interest, the club’s board considers the fee too high for an 18-year-old with limited minutes in Marcelo Gallardo’s first team.
Subiabre, regarded as one of the brightest prospects in Argentine football, has a contract with River Plate until 2026. The release clause approximately R$168 million is currently the main obstacle to Barça advancing further in negotiations.
Premier League Rivals Watching
While Barcelona hesitate, Premier League giants Arsenal and Chelsea are closely monitoring the situation. The Gunners have only recently stepped up their scouting, while Chelsea’s pursuit has been longer and more consistent, with manager Enzo Maresca tracking Subiabre since May 2025.
Both English clubs are seen as serious contenders should River Plate insist on full payment of the release clause.
Who Is Ian Subiabre?
A left-footed striker who prefers to operate as a right winger, Subiabre is versatile enough to play centrally. His main strengths include acceleration, close control, and clinical finishing traits that have already drawn comparisons to some of Argentina’s top exports.
His breakthrough came in 2023 when he signed a professional deal with River and was promoted to the senior squad. Internationally, he has featured for Argentina’s U-20 team, earning praise for his technical ability and maturity.
A Chance to Impress in Brazil
Subiabre will soon have another big stage to showcase his potential. River Plate face Palmeiras in the Copa Libertadores semifinals this September, with the first leg in Buenos Aires on September 17 and the decisive return at Allianz Parque on September 24.
For Brazilian fans, it will be a golden opportunity to watch one of South America’s most talked-about young players in action.
