After Manchester United’s humiliation against Grimsby Town, Kobbie Mainoo demands to be loaned out this summer

Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo has formally requested a loan move after the club’s humiliating Carabao Cup exit to Grimsby Town.

United suffered one of the biggest upsets of the season on Tuesday (27), crashing out of the competition against a League Two side, sparking fury among fans and mounting pressure on manager Rúben Amorim. While the Portuguese coach has so far kept his job, the defeat has accelerated decisions on the future of several players.

Mainoo demands loan for more minutes

According to journalist Fabrizio Romano, Mainoo has told the United board he wants to leave on loan before the summer transfer window closes. The 20-year-old midfielder believes the Red Devils’ early Carabao Cup exit reduces his chances of regular minutes, as domestic cups usually provide squad rotation opportunities.

Importantly, Mainoo has not requested a permanent departure. His wish is to gain experience on loan while staying tied to United, where he has a contract until June 2027. The academy product is currently valued at €50 million (R$316 million) and remains regarded as one of the club’s brightest prospects.

Other exits expected at Old Trafford

Mainoo may not be the only departure before deadline day. United are in advanced talks to offload several players who are no longer in Amorim’s plans. Among them:

  • Alejandro Garnacho, linked with Chelsea
  • Rasmus Højlund, in talks with Napoli
  • Antony, targeted by Real Betis

Negotiations are expected to intensify before the weekend, as United look to reshape their squad after the embarrassing cup exit.
