Vini Jr. is under pressure at Real Madrid and is losing his untouchable status, says former LaLiga player

Vinícius Júnior is no longer considered untouchable at Real Madrid, according to former Spanish international Santiago Cañizares, who believes the Brazilian forward has been psychologically affected by soaring expectations and the pressure to win the Ballon d’Or.

Speaking on the Spanish radio program El Partidazo de COPE, Cañizares, a former Valencia and Spain goalkeeper, offered a candid assessment of Vini Jr.’s recent struggles. “The obsession with the Ballon d’Or has mentally worn him down. He’s no longer playing freely, and the psychological weight has taken a toll,” he said.

From Star Man to Question Mark

The 24-year-old forward was once seen as the heir to Real Madrid’s attacking legacy. After two standout seasons, expectations were sky-high. However, during the 2024/25 campaign, despite producing 22 goals and 19 assists across 58 matches, Vini Jr. came under fire for his performances in key fixtures particularly during the Club World Cup, where Madrid failed to win the title.

“Maintaining peak performance at a young age is not just a physical task it’s mental,” said Cañizares. “The media and fan pressure tied to individual awards like the Ballon d’Or have created a narrative that’s hard for a young player to navigate.”

A New Era Under Xabi Alonso

The timing of Vini’s dip in form coincides with significant changes at the Santiago Bernabéu. With Xabi Alonso now in charge and new arrivals like Kylian Mbappé and Jude Bellingham commanding attention, the Brazilian star finds himself in a more competitive spotlight.

Cañizares warned that while Vini still possesses world-class ability, his role in the team is no longer guaranteed: “The debate over the Ballon d’Or has harmed him to the point that some fans now view him as expendable.”

Fight to Reclaim His Place

With the 2025/26 season fast approaching, Vinícius Júnior faces a crucial test — not just to prove his form on the pitch, but to reaffirm his place in the hearts of Madridistas. As the club transitions into a new era, the Brazilian will need to combine mental resilience with top-tier performances if he hopes to lead the line once again.
