Veteran defender says 35°C temperatures in New Jersey affected performance in 2-0 defeat to Chelsea

Fluminense’s Club World Cup dream came to an end on Tuesday (July 8) after a 2-0 loss to Chelsea in the semifinal played at MetLife Stadium, in New Jersey. After the match, experienced center-back Thiago Silva pointed to the extreme heat as a key factor in the Brazilian side’s elimination.

“The Spectacle Was Left Aside,” Says Thiago Silva

Speaking to CazéTV after the game, Thiago Silva lamented both the team’s performance and the harsh weather conditions, which surpassed 35°C (95°F) at kickoff.

“It was a very difficult day, in every sense of the word,” Silva said. “We couldn’t keep possession, apply pressure, or resist Chelsea’s attack. Playing in this kind of weather is sad the spectacle is left aside.”

The veteran defender, who previously played for Chelsea and joined Fluminense this season, emphasized that the team had exceeded expectations by reaching the semifinals.

“As I’ve said a few times, not even the most passionate fan could’ve imagined we’d make it this far,” he added.

Tough Conditions Take a Toll

While several European players had already voiced complaints about the high temperatures during the tournament, it was Fluminense a Brazilian club used to tropical heat that appeared more affected this time. The dry heat and artificial turf at MetLife Stadium seemed to slow down Flu’s high-possession style.

Chelsea Advances to the Final

With the win, Chelsea advances to the Club World Cup final, where they will face the winner of Real Madrid vs PSG, to be decided on Wednesday (July 9). Fluminense, meanwhile, leaves the competition with their heads held high after a historic campaign that included a quarterfinal victory over Al-Hilal.
