Barcelona’s 2025 summer transfer window continues to buzz with speculation, and while much of the attention has been focused on the attack with Nico Williams nearing a move there’s one area that remains notably thin: right-back.
Despite Jules Koundé featuring in almost every game last season, playing more minutes than any defender aside from Pau Cubarsí, it’s important to remember that Koundé is a natural centre-back. His adaptation to the right side has been commendable, but it’s not a long-term solution.
A Squad Thin on Right-Backs
With Héctor Fort as the only natural right-back available, and still just 18 years old, Barcelona lack serious depth in that position. An injury to Koundé would leave Flick’s squad dangerously exposed a problem that was evident at times during the 2024/25 campaign.
The Options: Cancelo, Pubill, or Vanderson?
João Cancelo (€12–15M)
- Age: 31
- Club: Manchester City (loaned to Barça last season)
- Pros: Knows the club, experienced, strong in attack
- Cons: Defensive lapses, high salary, short-term solution
Cancelo is the “safe” option due to his familiarity with the squad and style of play. However, Barcelona must ask if investing in a 31-year-old prone to mistakes is the wisest use of funds during a tight financial window.
Marc Pubill (Almería)
- Age: 22
- Estimated Fee: €10–12M
- Pros: U21 Spain standout, Barcelona native, long-term option
- Cons: Less top-level experience
Pubill impressed during the U21 European Championship, showing both composure and technical skill under pressure. Given his youth and potential resale value, he could be a smart investment for the futur and he ticks the box of developing Spanish talent.
Vanderson (Monaco)
- Age: 24
- Estimated Fee: €40M
- Pros: Stronger pedigree, experience at elite level
- Cons: Expensive, Monaco unlikely to lower price
While Vanderson offers immediate quality and experience, Barcelona’s financial constraints make a €40M move nearly impossible without major sales. He’s the best player on the list but arguably the least realistic.
The Verdict: Yes, But Be Smart
There’s no doubt: Barcelona must sign a right-back this summer. Koundé can’t carry the burden alone, and the risk of burnout or injury is too great. But it must be a strategic signing, not a flashy one.
Ideal Scenario
- Marc Pubill emerges as the most sensible target affordable, talented, local, and long-term.
- If Barcelona wants an immediate solution, Cancelo on a low-cost deal might suffice as a one-season stopgap.
