Manchester United make offer for Morten Hjulmand, former pillar of Ruben Amorim at Sporting

Danish international also targeted by Juventus as Red Devils push for midfield reinforcements
Manchester United have made an official €40 million offer for Morten Hjulmand, one of the standout performers under Rúben Amorim at Sporting CP, according to Italian outlet Calciomercato. However, the Portuguese club is holding firm, demanding at least €50 million for the Danish midfielder.
Transfer tug-of-war between United and Juventus
The 25-year-old has also caught the attention of Juventus, now managed by Igor Tudor, with both clubs expected to battle for his signature in the coming days. Sporting, however, remains in a strong negotiating position as Hjulmand is under contract until June 2028.
The Lisbon-based club is not under pressure to sell and will only consider parting ways if their valuation is met. Manchester United’s opening bid falls €10 million short of that target.
Amorim influence at Manchester United
Hjulmand’s strong link with Rúben Amorim is a key factor in United’s interest. The midfielder was a central figure during Amorim’s successful tenure at Sporting, where he helped reestablish the club as a domestic powerhouse.
Since his arrival in August 2023, the Danish international has captained the team and become a fan favorite thanks to his composed, tactical style. Amorim now reportedly sees him as a crucial piece in rebuilding Manchester United’s midfield.
United’s transfer window strategy
Operating under a restricted transfer budget, Manchester United have focused on targeted acquisitions this summer. Recent signings include Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha, two players seen as essential to Amorim’s tactical setup.
These additions reportedly impacted the club’s ability to pursue Alexander Isak from Newcastle, another long-standing target. With limited funds remaining, United are now prioritizing Hjulmand to round out their summer business.
Sporting holds firm amid interest
Sporting’s reluctance to negotiate below €50 million stems not only from Hjulmand’s performance but also his leadership role within the squad. The Portuguese side is confident it can retain the player unless a club meets its valuation outright.
With both Manchester United and Juventus circling, the coming weeks could prove decisive in determining whether Hjulmand continues in Lisbon or moves to one of Europe’s elite leagues.
