Premier League club considers loan with obligation to buy after €77M flop

Manchester United are reportedly willing to loan out striker Rasmus Hojlund in a bid to move on from what is now being labeled internally as a disappointing investment. The club had hoped to sell the Danish forward permanently but is now open to loan proposals, provided they include a mandatory purchase clause.

United desperate to recover part of €77M fee

According to Corriere dello Sport, United’s leadership including co-owner Jim Ratcliffe and manager Rúben Amorim believe it is essential to recoup a portion of the €77 million spent on Hojlund’s transfer from Atalanta in 2023. A traditional sale has proven difficult, forcing the club to explore loan-to-buy scenarios.

The proposed structure would see Hojlund depart temporarily, with the receiving club obligated to permanently sign him at the end of the loan period.

Serie A return a real possibility

With Hojlund placed on the transfer list, interest has begun to surface from Italian clubs, including his former side Atalanta and capital club Lazio. Both are reportedly monitoring the situation closely, sensing an opportunity to acquire a young talent whose market value has dropped significantly.

The 21-year-old is now valued at €35 million, less than half of his original transfer fee, following a modest return of 26 goals and six assists in 95 appearances for United.

Hojlund’s stock plummets after underwhelming season

Despite being touted as a rising star, Hojlund failed to live up to expectations at Old Trafford. He struggled to adapt to the Premier League’s pace and physicality, and is no longer viewed as part of United’s long-term project.

With interest cooling across Europe, a structured loan deal appears to be the only viable path forward for Manchester United to mitigate financial losses on the deal.
