Lucas Vázquez Rejects Botafogo Move Despite Davide Ancelotti’s Interest

Real Madrid legend prefers to remain in Europe, leaving Brazilian side to focus on Gonçalo Borges deal.

Former Real Madrid winger Lucas Vázquez has no intention of playing for Botafogo, despite receiving a direct invitation from new head coach Davide Ancelotti, according to Spanish outlet Defensa Central. The 33-year-old is currently a free agent after leaving Real Madrid, where he made over 400 appearances and won multiple major titles.

Ancelotti’s Request Turned Down

Ancelotti, who recently took charge at the Rio de Janeiro club, identified Vázquez as a priority target for his new project. However, despite expressing appreciation for the offer, the Spaniard declined, stating he has no plans to play in Brazil at this point in his career.

Vázquez reportedly believes he still has the physical and technical level to compete in Europe and is evaluating offers from clubs on the continent. Though interest has emerged from teams outside Europe, including Brazil, a move abroad is considered unfeasible for now.

Botafogo Now Targeting Gonçalo Borges

With Vázquez off the table, Botafogo is turning its attention to Gonçalo Borges, the 24-year-old winger from FC Porto. The two clubs have already reached an agreement, and negotiations are now focused on aligning terms with the player’s representatives.

The main point of contention is the stance of Borges’ father, who has not yet given the green light to the Rio club’s proposal. Nonetheless, sources close to the situation describe the mood around the transfer as “optimistic.”

Last season, Borges stood out for his direct style and dribbling ability, completing 32 successful dribbles in just 10 starts for Porto.

Botafogo’s Current Campaign and Upcoming Fixtures

Botafogo, currently 6th in the Brasileirão, is chasing consistency as the league progresses. Following a frustrating draw against Vitória, the club prepares for upcoming away matches against Sport and Grêmio, before returning home to face Corinthians in Rio de Janeiro.

The table is currently led by Flamengo, Cruzeiro, and Bragantino, all tied with 27 points, adding urgency to Glorioso’s transfer strategy as the season heats up.
