Juan Fernando Quintero Returns to River Plate After Standout Spell in Colombia

2018 Copa Libertadores hero reunites with Marcelo Gallardo at Monumental de Núñez.
Juan Fernando Quintero is officially back at River Plate, reigniting a partnership that delivered one of the most memorable moments in South American football history. The Argentine giants confirmed the return of the 32-year-old Colombian midfielder on Thursday, marking the beginning of a new chapter for both player and club.
Quintero, a 2018 Copa Libertadores champion, famously scored a stunning goal against Boca Juniors in the extra time of the Madrid final a moment that sealed his place in River folklore. That match, which ended 3-1 with an iconic counter-attack goal from Pity Martínez, remains one of the most significant in the club’s history.
River Plate’s Most Anticipated Signing This Window
The attacking midfielder rejoins River after an impressive spell with América de Cali, where he registered three goals and six assists in just 21 appearances. His performances helped him secure a return to Núñez, this time as a full signing rather than a loan deal.
Quintero’s comeback was a personal request from coach Marcelo Gallardo, under whom he enjoyed his best years in South America. Their renewed partnership is expected to play a key role in River’s domestic and continental ambitions this season.
Quintero’s Career Path: From Europe to South America
The Colombian playmaker began his professional journey at Envigado before moving to Europe, where he featured for Porto and Rennes. His first spell at River began in 2018 on loan from Porto, and after helping the team lift the Libertadores trophy, he stayed until 2020 when he moved to Shenzhen FC in China.
He returned briefly in 2022 before playing for Junior Barranquilla, Racing Club, and most recently, América de Cali.
Squad Reinforcements Continue in Núñez
Quintero is not the only new arrival at Monumental Stadium. River Plate also secured the signings of Matías Galarza, Juan Portillo, and Maxi Salas as part of a broader effort to strengthen the squad. Still, Quintero’s return stands out as the most emotional and high-profile move.
His iconic number 10 jersey and long-standing relationship with the River fanbase ensure that expectations will be high as he embarks on a third stint with the club he helped define on the biggest stage in South American football.
