Guardiola avoids comparing Yamal to Messi: “It’s like Van Gogh, let’s wait”

Manchester City boss praises Barcelona prodigy but insists on patience as the 16-year-old begins his journey
Pep Guardiola has called for restraint in comparing Lamine Yamal to Lionel Messi, despite the young Barcelona star’s meteoric rise. Speaking in an interview with GQ Spain, the Manchester City manager acknowledged Yamal’s extraordinary talent but warned that such parallels could create unnecessary pressure.
“Comparing him to Messi already says a lot. But it’s like talking about a painter and quoting Van Gogh,” Guardiola said. “It shows he has something special, but he still needs to build his career.”
“Let the boy play,” says Guardiola
Yamal, who recently inherited Barcelona’s iconic No. 10 shirt at just 16 years old, has drawn attention across the football world for his composure and technical brilliance. But Guardiola, who managed Messi during his golden years at Camp Nou, believes the youngster must be allowed time to develop naturally.
“Let’s wait fifteen years and then we’ll see who he is. For now, let the boy play,” he added.
The remarks reflect a growing sentiment among veteran coaches and analysts who are wary of the hype surrounding emerging stars. Guardiola’s comments come from a place of experience not only with Messi, but also with nurturing young talents throughout his managerial career.
Guardiola hints at sabbatical after Man City
In the same interview, Guardiola also opened up about his own future. After nearly a decade with Manchester City, the 53-year-old manager revealed he is contemplating a career break once his time in England concludes.
“I don’t know how long I’ll stop. One, two, five years. But I will stop. I need to reconnect with myself and my body,” he explained.
A legacy of trophies at City
Guardiola took charge of Manchester City in 2016 and has since turned the club into one of Europe’s most dominant forces. Under his leadership, City have claimed:
- 6 Premier League titles
- 1 UEFA Champions League
- FA Cups, League Cups, UEFA Super Cup
- FIFA Club World Cup title
