From Futsal to Football Fame: How Richard Ríos Became a Fan Favorite at Palmeiras

The Colombian star once doubted he’d make it in football — now he’s a Club World Cup sensation and social media phenomenon
Few stories in football are as unexpected or inspiring as Richard Ríos’ rise.
Now a key figure for Palmeiras and the Colombian national team, the 24-year-old midfielder is turning heads at the Club World Cup and lighting up transfer rumors with interest from Atlético Madrid, PSG, and others. But long before he dazzled fans in Brazil, Ríos thought his path to the professional game was a dead end.
Futsal First: The Unlikely Beginning
Born in Colombia, Ríos began his athletic journey on indoor courts, not fields. At just 18, he traveled to Brazil to represent his country in a South American futsal tournament, competing against teams like Brazil, Ecuador, and Venezuela.
“I really didn’t think I had a chance in football,” Ríos told FIFA.
“I divided my time between futsal and field, but eventually leaned toward futsal because I thought I wouldn’t go far on the pitch.”
But fate had other plans.
Flamengo Took a Chance
During trials in Rio de Janeiro, Flamengo scouts spotted Ríos’ raw talent. He joined the club’s U-20 squad and eventually made it to the senior team in 2020. However, limited opportunities led him to brief stints at Mazatlán (Mexico) and Guarani, where he kept improving — and caught the eye of Palmeiras.
A Breakthrough at Palmeiras
In 2023, Palmeiras gave Ríos the platform he needed and he delivered.
He quickly became a regular under Abel Ferreira, thanks to his ball control, intelligence, and natural flair attributes honed in futsal. In his debut season, he played 53 matches, and in 2025, he’s already matched last year’s goal tally in fewer appearances.
Now a regular starter for Colombia, Ríos is one of the most complete midfielders in the league and among the top 3 most valuable foreign players in Brazil.
Charisma On and Off the Pitch
Ríos isn’t just a star on the field he’s a sensation off it, too.
His celebrations, dances, and behind-the-scenes videos have made him a viral hit, especially among Palmeiras’ Colombian fanbase. His popularity even led the club to create TikTok content in Spanish during Copa América due to high demand.
Fans frequently post “edits” tribute videos set to music capturing Ríos’ magic on and off the ball. Whether he’s scoring goals, laughing with teammates, or dancing post-match, his presence resonates far beyond the scoreboard.
Transfer Market Buzz — But Will He Stay?
With clubs like Atlético Madrid showing concrete interest, Ríos’ future at Palmeiras is uncertain. The club values him around €16 million (R$101M) and interest is growing rapidly after his Club World Cup performances.
Whatever happens, one thing is clear: if Ríos leaves, Palmeiras fans will feel the loss both on the pitch and across their feeds.
