Francesco Farioli appeals to the feelings of FC Porto players: “Our story must begin with the pain of last season”

The new Dragons coach calls for unity, sacrifice, and resilience in his first speech of the 2025/26 season.

Francesco Farioli has officially launched his era at FC Porto, and he did it with an emotional and powerful message. During a team meeting shared by the club on their official channels, the 36-year-old Italian manager spoke directly to the players about the struggles of last season and how that pain can fuel a new chapter of success.

“We Have a Lot in Common”

In his first major address to the squad, Farioli looked to connect emotionally with his players, referencing both their disappointment from the 2024/25 campaign and his own tough season with Ajax.

“We have a lot in common. It was a difficult season for you, for me, and for part of my coaching staff,” said Farioli, acknowledging the shared frustration.
“Our story must begin with the pain of what we experienced last season.”

“Competing to Win at FC Porto Is a Different Story”

The coach made it clear that playing for FC Porto is not like playing anywhere else. The expectations, the fans, and the club’s DNA demand more than just talent they demand character.

“Competing to win and playing for these clubs especially FC Porto is a different story,” he affirmed, reminding the squad of the weight and responsibility of wearing the blue and white jersey.

Training Intensity and a New Culture

FC Porto’s pre-season kicked off at Olival and Estádio do Dragão, with intense physical sessions to rebuild fitness after a short break due to the Club World Cup. The focus is not only physical but also psychological: Farioli is building a culture of sacrifice, effort, and trust.

“If you want to improve and push yourself to the limit, trust me, you’re in the best place you could be,” he told the team.

Farioli’s Background: Pain as Fuel

Last season, Farioli endured a heartbreaking campaign with Ajax, losing the Eredivisie title in the final round despite holding a nine-point lead with five matches left. That experience, he says, taught him a lot about leadership and resilience.

He brings with him experience from:

  • Ajax (Netherlands)
  • Nice (France)
  • Alanyaspor & Karagümrük (Turkey)
