Courtois Renews Real Madrid Contract Until 2027, Signaling Shift in Club Policy for Veterans

Real Madrid have officially extended Thibaut Courtois’ contract until June 2027, marking a notable departure from the club’s traditional approach to veteran players. At 33, the Belgian goalkeeper receives both a contract extension and a salary increase indicating a new level of flexibility from the club hierarchy regarding players over 30.
Club Policy Shift for Experienced Players
The contract renewal adds one more season to Courtois’ previous deal, underscoring a broader shift in strategy by the Madrid board. Historically, the club has shied away from long-term commitments for players in their 30s, often citing concerns over physical decline and injury risk. However, Courtois widely regarded as one of the world’s top goalkeepers was considered an “exception” due to his leadership and consistent performance.
According to sources close to the negotiations, initial talks began in early 2025, with the first proposal aiming for an extension until 2028. Ultimately, the sides agreed to a new two-year commitment.
Performance and Recovery Influence Decision
Despite missing the majority of the 2023/24 season with a serious knee injury, Courtois returned in time to feature prominently in Real Madrid’s Club World Cup campaign. He started 53 of the club’s 68 matches last season and continues to be a key figure in both domestic and international fixtures.
Though his error in the Copa del Rey final against Barcelona drew criticism, Courtois remains highly respected in the dressing room. Real Madrid view him as both a technical anchor and an emotional leader during a transitional phase in the squad’s evolution.
Since joining the club in 2018, Courtois has made 288 appearances and kept 113 clean sheets statistical proof of his enduring value between the posts.
Xabi Alonso’s Vote of Confidence
Manager Xabi Alonso has made it clear that Courtois remains central to his plans, praising the goalkeeper after the Champions League win over Borussia Dortmund: “He makes the difference in big games.”
The presence of Andriy Lunin, who recently renewed with the club until 2030, is not seen as a threat to Courtois’ starting position. Rather, Madrid view the pair as complementary pieces in a competitive squad.
Nine Seasons in White
With this renewal, Courtois is on track to complete nine seasons at Real Madrid a remarkable tenure for a player in one of football’s most demanding positions. The deal reaffirms the club’s new stance: performance not age will be the decisive factor in contract policy.
